Chapter 15

“Cutters Four and Five have, indeed, left the premises at eleven forty-seven in the evening.”

Justin nodded at Marcus’ words, wordlessly watching the security footage with a deep frown on his face. That footage revealed two Daggers slipping away into the night, power-walking at a steady but urgent pace away from the Tower of Shields.

Lieutenant Matthew Waters likewise frowned, though his upper lip twitched in suppressed fury at the betrayal.

“Guess you were right not to trust them back then,” Justin drawled, still glaring at the looped video. “They bugged out mere minutes before the anklets were triggered, ducking out of dodge before we could nab them for questioning.”

Waters just nodded angrily, not trusting his lips to betray his emotions.

Marcus, aka Silver Sentinel, paused the video before turning to face both Justin and Waters.

“So, let me get this straight: everything I heard about the Dagger Program is true? Specifically, the parts where you capture mass-murderers, slap modified ankle bracelets that release lethal poisons, and coerce those killers into what is essentially forced slavery to hunt down other killers?”

Justin nodded sheepishly in reply.

“…and all this was actually established before the Shield Program? Who thought this was a good idea!?”

Justin turned aside and awkwardly scratched his chin.

“Well, when you put it that way…”

Marcus snorted audibly, shaking his head as Justin left his sentence hanging.

“You still haven’t told me what you did to save your team back there.” He hesitated, thinking of how best to phrase his next words. “They just seemed to… flow backwards. That was… strange, to put it mildly.”

Justin side-eyed Marcus for a bit, examining the paragon of the Shields and the beacon of international cooperation. He thought about coming up with another reason to set that discussion aside, but he just sighed.

“I mess around with time.” Marcus blinked. Justin rolled his eyes. “I can slow time, freeze time, look forward in time, go back in time, send someone back in time. I did that last bit for my buddies in case you were wondering.”

Marcus blinked again. He blinked once more, then scowled.

“You’re joking.”

“Nope,” Justin drawled yet again, adding another pop to the end of the word. “Sent the three of them back in time, right when the anklets were about to be activated.”

Justin chuckled mirthlessly. “You also watched me freeze time when I sliced off their anklets with my blade. Doing that in normal time would have automatically triggered the poison release mechanism, and I just couldn’t wait around for you to leave if command decided to send another activation command just in case.”

Marcus pursed his lips, closed his eyes to give it a quick think, then nodded. “That… does explain how you seem to teleport from one point to another and move like a blur. Seeing into the future could also explain how insanely quickly you react to all those ambushes we figure into.”

Justin hummed in response, matching it with a nod of his head.

“Just keep that under wraps, yeah? Nobody’s really supposed to bend time in the games, and I’m going to get into serious trouble if that knowledge reaches the wrong ears.
